Trouten Fans Career-Best 8 but Chargers Drop Season Opener

CARTERVILLE — The Carl Sandburg College baseball team grabbed a lead in the middle innings but lost its season opener 7-2 at John A. Logan on Thursday in the Logan Classic.



The Chargers (0-1) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth behind back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore Marty Mennenga (Rantoul, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) and freshman Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) before surrendering six unanswered runs.


After allowing a first-inning tally, Chargers starter Matt Trouten (Moline, Ill./Moline) put up four straight scoreless frames before giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Trouten allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings while fanning a career-best eight batters.


The Volunteers (5-3) extended their lead with a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth.


Chargers center fielder Payton Hartbank (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) went 3 for 4 with a double and run scored in his collegiate debut. Mennenga and third baseman Mitchell Ellison (East Moline, Ill./United Township) each added a pair of singles for Sandburg, which totaled 11 hits.


The Chargers will continue play in the Classic on Friday with games at 9:30 a.m. against South Suburban and at noon against Illinois Valley. Sandburg also will face Illinois Central at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
