GALESBURG — The family of Carl Sandburg College alumna Louise Swanson has established a nursing scholarship in her honor through the Sandburg Foundation. The Louise Swanson Nursing Scholarship is now open for application and will be awarded annually.
This scholarship will assist nontraditional parents working their way through Sandburg’s associate degree nursing (RN) program. Swanson’s family chose to honor her dedication to higher education and passion for the nursing profession through this unique gift, which was presented to her on Christmas Eve. Swanson, who began her career as an EMT and paramedic before becoming a trauma nurse specialist, was shocked and moved by the actions of her loved ones.
“This is a way I can give back while helping someone complete his or her nursing degree,” said Swanson, a 1990 graduate of Sandburg’s RN program. “I love being a nurse.”
