Volleyball Stopped by Sauk Valley in Region IV Title Match

GRAYSLAKE — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team advanced to the finals of the Region IV District A tournament on Saturday before falling short of reaching its first trip to nationals in a four-set loss to 10th-ranked Sauk Valley.



The third-seeded Chargers (15-20) took down No. 2 seed Moraine Valley 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19 in the semifinals before losing to top-seeded Sauk Valley 25-20, 14-25, 25-15, 25-12 in the championship.


It’s the sixth time Sandburg has finished as runner-up in the region tournament (1982, 1985, 1987, 2010 and 2011 being the others). Of the Chargers’ 20 losses on the season, 14 came against ranked opponents. The Skyhawks (32-7) advance to their third straight national tournament, which will take place Nov. 17-19 in Charleston, W.Va.


Chelsea Lesniewski (Fulton) had 14 kills and 22 digs to lead Sandburg against Moraine Valley. The Chargers also got double-digit kills efforts from Sam Mayberry (Pekin), who had 12, and Lexi Strange (Hartsburg-Emden), who added 10.


Emma Derry (Southeastern) handed out 38 assists and had 22 digs for the Chargers. Adre Vetter (Hartsburg-Emden) had a team-best 28 digs while Aleksa Ladd (Fieldcrest) recorded five blocks.


Lesniewski added another double-double against Sauk Valley in her final match as a Charger, posting 13 kills and 11 digs. Strange had 11 kills while Derry passed out 30 assists and had 11 digs for Sandburg. Vetter had 31 digs and two aces for the Chargers, and Mayberry had a team-leading three blocks against the Skyhawks.
