GALESBURG — Stephen Nganga’s go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute lifted the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lake County on Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field in the first round of the Region IV tournament.

The Chargers (7-6-1), the No. 3 seed from the Championship Group, advance to play at the still-to-be-determined No. 6 seed out of the Premiership Group in the second round at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Nganga tallied the game-winner on a rebound after Victor Dantas’ initial shot in the box. Nganga gathered it in from close range and put home his third goal of the season.

Sandburg, which snapped a three-game skid, opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Sam Walton fed Francisco Urtubey in the box, and Urtubey’s turnaround shot snuck inside the far post for his first goal of the year.

The Lancers (5-10-0), the sixth seed in the Premiership Group, tied it in the 54th minute. Lake County’s Victor Ortiz intercepted a clearance attempted and lofted a shot over keeper George Mutimer, who had come off his line.

Mutimer and Daniel Nimmins each played a half and made one save apiece as the Chargers’ back line allowed just three shots on goal and six shots total. Sandburg tallied 20 shots, with nine on net.
