GALESBURG — A record 19 Carl Sandburg College student-athletes received NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards for their success in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year.

Student-athletes with a 4.00 cumulative GPA were awarded the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence. Those with a GPA of 3.80-3.99 received the Superior Academic Achievement Award, and those with a cumulative GPA of 3.60-3.79 were given the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award.

Sandburg had four athletes earn the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, four receive the Superior Academic Achievement Award and 11 earn the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award. Seven Chargers teams had at least one recipient, and the Sandburg volleyball team had four award-winners, tops among all teams.

In a change from previous years, first-year student-athletes with at least 24 semester hours were eligible for the awards in 2015-16. That helped lead to a record 4,587 NJCAA student-athletes (7.98 percent of all participants) earning national recognition.
