Men's Soccer Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Kevin Mahlan
Kevin Mahlan, who boasts 15 years of experience as a head coach, was hired as the men’s soccer coach at Carl Sandburg College in June 2016.
Mahlan, who serves as fitness skills coach at the College, came to the Chargers after spending the previous two seasons as the women’s soccer coach at Iowa Lakes Community College. A native of Lindenhurst, N.Y., Mahlan started his college coaching career in 2011 as the men’s soccer coach at Tri-County (S.C.) Technical College, an NJCAA Division I program.
Prior to that, he was the boys soccer coach at Winter Haven (Fla.) High School from 2006-2010. In 2009, his team won its first district title, and he was named the Winter Haven News Chief’s Coach of the Year. Before that, he coached varsity teams at Haines City (Fla.) and Tavares (Fla.) high schools in addition to serving as a competitive club coach and player for Lakeland Football Club from 2000-2011.
A retired police officer, Mahlan spent 22 years on the force in Florida before becoming a high school science teacher in 1999. Mahlan has an associate degree in criminal justice from Farmingdale University, a bachelor’s in criminal justice management from LaSalle University and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from the American College of Education.
Assistant Coach: Kokou Kaho
Kokou Kaho has been an assistant with the Chargers since 2013. He served as the team's interim head coach at the end of the 2013 campaign, helping the team to the best season in program history. That squad finished 15-5-0 overall and won the Region IV Championship Group with a 6-1-0 record, the first title of any kind in Sandburg soccer history. The Chargers also finished that season in the semifinals of the Region IV tournament, their deepest postseason run ever.
