Dual Credit For High School
Registration: Carl Sandburg College staff work with the high school counselors at the high schools to facilitate registration. Students should meet with their high school counselor to begin the process for Dual Credit enrollment.
Placement testing: Each course has set reading levels which a student must show aptitude in before placement in the course. The Accuplacer placement test will be able to show the students ability level to qualify for the coursework. For more information on where to take the Accuplacer test, dates given and how to study for the Accuplacer, visit sandburg.edu/admissions/placement.
Payment: Students must make payment in full or enroll in the payment plan by the set dates for the semester, typically 4 weeks prior to the start of the term. If payment is not made, students will be dropped from their courses and will need to re-enroll and arrange payment. Students can enroll in the automated online payment plan by clicking on the quicklinks tab on sandburg.edu, choose Deferred Payment Plan. You will need to have your seven digit student ID to complete the enrollment. Students may also pay with credit card, check or cash, through any of the campuses at Bushnell, Carthage or Galesburg. Students may view their balance on WebAdvisor. Directions to use WebAdvisor are below.
Tuition & Scholarships: For the 2016 - 2017 school year, the cost for a three credit hour course is $465.00, or $155.00 per credit hour. There is a $25 registration fee per semester. This cost does not include textbooks. Dual Credit students receive a scholarship of 50% of their tuition for the first six credit hours each semester (or the first 4 credit hours each trimester), excluding summer term. When students enroll, this scholarship will automatically be applied. The scholarship does not apply for the Certified Nursing Assistant course, NUA 100 or summer coursework.
mySandburg: On Sandburg’s web portal, students will find announcements, information about billing, grades, transcripts, class schedule, textbooks for classes, email, and other resources. To login:
· Click on mysandburg at the upper right hand corner of sandburg.edu
· Click on the login window. For the first time user, login using the instructions on the left hand side of the page.
To reset your password, click on the link and follow the directions.
· Once you are in mysandburg, explore the various links.
· Online courses are through the Moodle program, which is on the upper left hand side of the page.
· Transcripts, GPA, payment and student information are on the right hand side under webadvisor.

FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA, was enacted by Congress in 1974 to protect the privacy of student educational records from unauthorized disclosure. All Sandburg Instructors and staff members follow the policy closely. If a parent wants specific information regarding their student’s progress in a course, Sandburg recommends the parent(s) and student schedule a meeting with the instructor. It is vital that the student be included in any communication. In addition, educational information regarding a student will not be released over the phone by a Sandburg official to anyone because the identity of the caller cannot be verified over the phone.
Coursework: By their very nature, dual credit courses are more rigorous than high school courses. Students should expect to spend at least two hours of study time for every hour of class time. This time could increase when a major project or paper is due, or before a major examination. In all cases, the instructors will provide a syllabus for the course that will outline information regarding grading, major assignments, deadlines, policies and procedures. This will give students an overview of the requirements of the course from the first week of class. We encourage the students to review the syllabus closely and discuss with the instructor any requirements they are unclear on. Throughout the semester, instructors will notify students of any major changes to the syllabus.
Textbooks: To find out which books are required, be sure to have your specific section numbers for your classes. At sandburg.edu, click on the class search tab halfway down on the left hand side, below the picture. Search for your class by choosing the semester and then click on the class name to get the course description. On the bottom of the page, click link to order textbook from store.
Students who wish to purchase books through the Carthage campus will need to fill out a book order form, which can be retrieved from the high school counselor or you can call the campus to request one be sent to you. Students are encouraged to order books early, because it takes about 10 days for delivery to the Carthage campus. Please call ahead for bookstore hours as hours vary by location. Grades: Sandburg instructors issue grades for courses at the end of the semester. Grades are provided to the school district for processing and placement on the high school transcript for high school credit. In most courses, final grades are determined by a small number of projects, papers or tests. This is common in college courses. Therefore, students and parents need to review the grading criteria for the course which is outlined on the syllabus and understand how final grades are determined.
Concerns: If there is a problem in a class, students are always encouraged to contact the instructor directly to address concerns. However, if the student wishes to discuss the issue with Sandburg supervisory personnel, we can assist with process.
